The writing is clunky, the plotting nonsensical, and the entire conceit laughable. Movies (horror especially) can get by with having just style or just substance but to lack both is unforgivable. Unfortunately, Truth or Dare was absolute garbage.
A Quiet Place Keeps Audiences Silent & on the Edge of Their Seats
Overall, A Quiet Place is not nearly as horror driven as one would expect from the trailers and the poster. But it is unnerving. As someone who rarely can sit through a horror film, this one was an enticing watch.
Ready Player One – A Better Work Than the Book, But That’s Not Saying Much
A lot is being made of Ready Player One as a ‘dumb popcorn flick.’ Spielberg is masterful at setting up his action, there’s no doubt there and he can imbue a movie with that sense of wonder, but he can only polish a turd so far.
Pacific Rim: Uprising Makes Up Its Missteps and Continues to Be Kaiju Fighting Fun
Pacific Rim Uprising is fun, even if it doesn’t quite recapture the surprising delight of the original. It has its low moments, but it keeps chugging along despite them and makes up for those missteps.
Love, Simon Showcases Teens at Their Best and Worst
‘Love, Simon’ is funny and if you’re looking for a coming of age tale (and a gay one at that!) that isn’t too trope-y or tragic you are in for a treat. It’s a fun teenage comedy, and you’ll find yourself caring for all of these kids.
Alicia Vikander Shines in Tomb Raider
Tomb Raider is a fun enough action-adventure flick with a strong female hero who goes through an actual arc from being a bit of a screwup to a motivated adventurer.
The Strangers: Bore At Night
Companies saw a place for another low budget horror movie to turn a profit but they couldn’t be bothered enough to wait an extra month to secure that sweet Friday the 13th money. The Strangers: Prey At Night cost $5mil to make, is projected to take in $7mil opening weekend and that’s enough for them.
A Wrinkle In Time: All You Need Is Love
A Wrinkle In Time is enjoyable, unabashedly earnest and preaching good things, even if it isn’t complicated. It’s a solid kid flick with cool visuals and a heartwarming message. Just don’t expect anything exceptionally deep or game-changing.
Gringo: No Es Bueno
Gringo is one of those movies where you can see the promise. You can see how the pieces might better fit together to create that madcap comedy. Unfortunately, it has too much superfluous padding throughout.
Death Wish Isn’t A Bad Movie, But It’s A Bad Time
Death Wish isn’t a bad movie, which is surprising given Roth’s recent batch of flicks, but it is at a bad time. America is in the midst of a crisis on guns and gun violence and a movie that glorifies it is bound to sit poorly.
