Following its successful festival run and growing online presence, the highly acclaimed mockumentary sitcom The Comic Shop is set to launch its first season straight out of Los Angeles, and they are in the thick of a Kickstarter campaign to support it! Created by and starring Nigerian-American multi-hyphenate Cheyenne Ewulu (Ex Roommate) as Stephanie Okeke, this innovative series centers on four misfit friends navigating the challenges of keeping their passion and store alive in the ever-changing digital age. With its clever writing and relatable humor, the series combines the charm of workplace comedies like The Office and Parks & Recreation with a heartfelt nod to geek culture.
With Zeno Robinson (My Hero Academia, Young Justice) as Keith Hendricks, Shanae Cole (Grown-ish) as Dominique Smith, and Grayson Niles (The Goldbergs, The Party) as Connor Ross, it was the stellar cast chemistry that led to the proof-of-concept trailer flooding Twitter with 1.7 million views! This fan favorite fueled the early buzz, leading to its successful festival run at the Micheaux Film Festival, Atlanta Film Festival, and Black Girls Rock Film Festival. It was even nominated for Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Digital Series at Micheaux!
Backed by legendary production team DYNMC—whose impressive portfolio includes work with Green Day, The Oscars, and Hulu—The Comic Shop promises to deliver quality, smart, and top-tier comedy. So, with Kickstarter support, Ewulu and the team have set out to raise $160,000, which will be used to produce a six-episode first season with 20-minute episodes.
So, why should you support it? You should support it because Ewulu is a rare talent, able to blend brilliant writing with dope comedic timing and a ton of heart. As the season progresses, you’ll fall in love with these characters even more.
And how can you help? Whether you’re a fan of geek culture, an indie film enthusiast, or just love supporting fresh voices, you can help by pledging to the Kickstarter, spreading the word, and encouraging others to join the movement.
One thing is for certain: The Comic Shop’s future is very bright. You can follow along on the journey and stay updated on the series by following Cheyenne Ewulu (@CheyenneTheGeek) and The Comic Shop on social media!
