Season 6 of All American has fans eagerly anticipating the continued growth and development of beloved characters Jordan (Michael Evans Behling) and Layla (Greta Onieogou). The show’s ability to explore the complexities of relationships, mental health, and personal growth has made it a significant cultural phenomenon, particularly for people of color who feel represented uniquely. Nerdophiles had the pleasure of chatting with Behling and Onieogou about what viewers can expect from Jordan and Layla as they navigate new challenges and opportunities this season.
On Jordan’s previous struggles in his relationships and learning from past mistakes, Behling said: “Jordan is trying to put his bad habit of being so consumed in his relationships that he forgets everything else to the wayside. This season, we see him incredibly focused on football. He’s a team leader now, and even though the NFL is not necessarily an end goal for him, he has started to get recognized for his talents on the field.”
While Jordan’s personal growth is evident, Layla also faces her own set of challenges. On Layla’s career focus this season, Onieogou stated: “Coming into this season, Layla is super focused on her businesses. She’s also dealing with the fallout of Patience’s stabbing, which affects her. This traumatic experience has a profound impact on Layla, influencing not only her business decisions but also her relationships. Despite these difficulties, she and Jordan are determined to maintain their individuality while supporting each other.”
On the topic of mental health and a potential wedding, after Layla deals with profound loss, including the death of her mother and Billy Baker (Taye Diggs), Onieogou also shared: “Layla has experienced profound loss throughout her life, and I can tease that the potential of a wedding is a beautiful thing, but that also comes with its stresses. This season continues to explore how these experiences shape her decisions and relationships.”
On the other hand, Jordan always tries to be there for Layla but sometimes finds it challenging to grasp the depth of her struggles fully. On Jordan’s commitment to Layla, Behling explains, “Jordan may not understand a tremendous amount about what Layla goes through with anxiety and depression, but he always does his best to be there. I appreciate how their dynamic reflects the real-life complexities many partners face when trying to support loved ones through mental health challenges.”
On the upcoming 100th episode milestone, Behling excitedly told us: “We’ve heard rumors of what might happen, but we don’t actually have a script in hand. I know It’s going to be grandiose, it’s going to be spectacular! Either way, It’s so cool to be part of that legacy, and 100 episodes is just huge when you think about the other shows that have reached that milestone. We’re among an elite group of shows, further solidifying our place in television history.” Onieogou added: “I loved the CW growing up, and it feels really incredible to be on a network that was so formative for me and on a show that I wish I had 100 episodes of when I was younger.”
