Captain America: The Ghost Army is an original graphic novel set in the Marvel comics universe. It is a great jumping in point for young readers who are curious about the Marvel comics and not just the cinematic universe many have grown up with. You’re getting old school Captain America and Bucky reimagined for a new, younger audience.

Set during WWII, The Ghost Army sees Captain America, Bucky, and their allies facing a literal ghost army as some nefarious magic brings falling German soldiers back to life. It’s a race against time for Cap and Bucky to find the source and shut it down. Along the way they’ll team up with some familiar faces as well as new ones. This graphic novel is full of action and even has sometime to throw in a little romance!

I loved how Alan Gratz worked in a lot of references to stories and characters that young readers will be familiar with from the films but in a way authentic to the original comics. Brent Schoonover’s illustrations brilliantly draw readers into the action and I love his take on Cap and Bucky. Captain America: The Ghost Army is a great pick for Marvel fans – especially those younger fans who want to start reading the comics but understandably don’t know how to tackle decades of source material!
