Coming nearly a year after its original slated release, In the Heights releases new posters and a trailers before its new release date on June 18th this Summer. Filmed on location in Washington Heights, director Jon M. Chu has been committed to the authenticity of the musical. Originally debuting on Broadway in 2008, the musical is based on a book by Quiara Alegría Hudes and turned into a musical with music and lyrics by Lin-Manuel Miranda. In the kaleidoscopic trailers and posters, we’re treated once again to Chu’s indulgent vision, this time full of song and dance.
Miranda, who currently lives in Washington Heights, went on to see In the Heights nominated for thirteen Tony Awards and winning four including Best Musical, Best Original Score, and Best Choreography. For the film’s director, screenwriter, cast, and producers, the film is a love letter to Washington Heights. One that can be brought to a whole new generation of people. Although the film is set in a primarily Dominican neighborhood, the film isn’t just about the Dominican story, it’s primarily about dreams. Achieving your dreams, dreaming your dreams, chasing your dreams.
In a twist of fate, Anthony Ramos, who played Miranda’s son in Hamilton is stepping in as the lead Usnavi de la Vega, a role that Miranda played in 2007 and 2009 during the show’s Off-Broadway and Broadway run. Ramos reminisced in a panel promoting the film that he saw the Broadway production when he was attending high school. He said that the play gave him hope and that it inspired him to continue pursuing his dream of acting even though he didn’t see a place for someone who looked and spoke like him in the industry.
In the Heights feels like an injection of life, the trailers tease a bit more of Chu, Miranda, and Hudes’s magical vision of Washington Heights. After a difficult year, it might be just what we need to feel hopeful again. Check out the new trailers for In the Heights below!
