For the last four years, Her Universe has held a fashion show at San Diego Comic Con, to showcase the creations of fans. And with their ties to Hot Topic, the winner is given the chance to design a line for Her Universe and Hot Topic. Last year, the winners designed a Wonder Woman inspired line. This year, the winners (three!) will be designing a Disney Princess themed line.
The seven judge panel included last year’s winner, Camille Falciola, and Harley Quinn Smith. They selected two winners, Rose Ivy and her design ” Sorceress Supreme” (inspired by Marvel’s Doctor Strange) and Lindsay Meesak Orndorff and her design “Leader of the Pack” (inspired by Studio Gibli’s Princess Mononoke). A fan favorite is also awarded after the audience submits ballots with their top vote; this year’s went to Grace Duvall and her design “Don’t Panic” (inspired by The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).
This was my first year attending the show, but it will definitely become something that I regularly attend at San Diego Comic Con. Fans who wanted to attend were required to arrive early (about an hour and a half before the show). Upon entering the ballroom, each seat held a goodie bag for all attendees. The tote bag included a Funko pop, nail polish, Espionage Cosmetic nail wraps, a t-shirt, coupons for both Hot Topic and Her Universe, and a Hallmark Itty Bitty. The bag alone makes the adventure worth it.
However, the show is just as incredible. Ashley Eckstein stunned the audience in her Cinderella inspired dress by Andrew Maclaine, and opened with sweet words on the inspiration that Disney has been to her.
During the show, several of Her Universe’s current lines were modeled including the recent Wonder Woman line, as well as a few pieces that will be released such as a Lizzie McGuire t-shirt. After this, the real show began. Each piece in the show was accompanied by a short video intro featuring the designer and the reasoning behind their design. Even if you don’t consider yourself a fashionista, these videos will likely inspire you with the pure heart and talent of nerds.
