Leggo my Eggo!
Be honest, you also fell for that Stranger Things fake out while watching the Super Bowl too.
We’ve known that the season two trailer and release date for the second season of Stranger Things would be dropped on February 6, but this teaser trailer brings up a whole host of new shots from the upcoming season that’ll give fans eight months to come up with theories of what we’re in for in the new season before Halloween 2017.
So what have we learned so far? For the sake of disclosure, many of my theories here come from the Stranger Things subreddit, where theories have been thrown around since the show premiered.
More Breaches are Happening
After the Eggo commercial, there’s a jump transition into Mike shouting Eleven, a soundbite from season one. We also see Eleven wake up. Could she be hearing Mike calling her name from wherever she is now? The trailer seems to suggest that the world is turning upside down. Does this mean that we’ll be seeing more of the upside down bleed through to our world, like the small patch in the woods that Nancy crawled through?
One Year Later
Obviously, it won’t be long before we see Eleven again, but then we also get shots of Mike, Dustin, and Lucas dressed up like Ghostbusters. The season is set in 1984, a year after the events of season three, and also the year that the iconic Ghostbusters was released. There’s no sign of Will Byers, but more on that later.
Then we see Hopper with what is probably a shovel. What is he digging? There’s no way he needs a shovel to dig a hole for the box he leaves Eleven, so what is he burying? Or digging up for that fact?
You Can’t Trust the Man
And where is this person going? It looks like a potential shot from the Hawkins National Laboratory, but this looks a little less cobbled together than the breach at the bottom of the Hawkins basement. It looks like the suit is being sanitized and that the person going through is holding something like a blowtorch weapon. Is there another creature coming through?
Is this guy connected to what Hopper is doing? Are they connected to the people who are doing testing on Will?
We see in this screenshot, dated the day before Halloween — the day before the series returned, Will and Joyce in a laboratory with Will in a hospital gown. I doubt that the shots from the teaser are from more than the first two episodes of the season, so perhaps this is a flashback?
Will is Definitely Not Okay
We know from the final shot of season one that Will Byers is back but not exactly the same as when he left. After spending almost a week in the Upside Down he’s definitely become something else. We saw him getting some experiments done on him in the previous shot, but it looks like his suffering is just beginning. This is emphasized even more by the fact that he is missing from the Ghostbuster Halloween shots.
You’re Going To Be Missing the Demogorgon
It looks like Will isn’t just coughing up parts of the Upside Down. He’s seeing things. In the final shots of the teaser, we see a drawing — presumably drawn by Will — of some kind of giant spiderlike monster. One that Reddit seems to think is the Thessalhydra.
But it’s not just a drawing.
We see Will, who is wearing what looks like a hospital gown, standing in front of an opening door. It looks like the wind is blowing it open slowly, but could he also be controlling it with his mind? Does the fact that he’s in the gown mean that this is a hallucination/vision from his doctor’s visit?
Then we see the shadow of the new beast that makes us almost miss the Demogorgon.
What do you think of the teaser? What theories do you subscribe to? The second season of Stranger Things will be dropping on Halloween, October 31, 2017. Check out the Super Bowl spot below!
