Synopsis for 1×06: The Rio situation finally seems to get resolved, but unfortunately for Jackson and Jamie their situation takes a turn for the worse.

This is the show I’ve been waiting for all summer. Finally, this week’s episode drew me in so deeply I couldn’t believe when it was over. It picked back up in Rio, with the attack of the bats, and Mitch and Chloe were manhandled into an apartment hideout overseen by the infamous gangster Silva. While they’ve been kidnapped, Abraham rushed to the Brazilian intelligence agent they’d spoken with earlier to tell her about it. However, they’d just decided to drop a potentially harmful chemical on the bats and Abraham had to take things into his own hands to save his friends since the Brazilian government was a bit preoccupied.

Back at the scene of last week’s crash, caused by Evan Lee Hartley, Jackson and Agent Shaffer comforted Jamie and tried to figure out what she might remember. All she could tell them was that Evan Lee Hartley had stolen the mother cell, and Shaffer went to tell the bad news to his bosses while Jackson insisted it wasn’t Jamie’s fault.

As it has been episode after episode, the next animal attack was revealed. This time, a bear let itself into a French woman’s apartment. She didn’t notice at first, but when she did, its reign of terror began. All throughout the episode her story was touched on as the terrified woman hid in the pantry to try and keep the bear away from her. The bear trashed her kitchen, and only paid attention to her the moment she tried to get her cell phone and drew attention to herself. It wasn’t pretty.

In Rio, Silva insisted that Chloe and Mitch needed to come up with a solution to the bat problem that didn’t involve stealing his antennae. He gave them an ultimatum: figure something out or die. Trying to keep them alive long enough for Abraham to get to them, Chloe suggested they construct an electromagnetic pulse to try and attract the bats to it and away from everything else. Mitch jumped on board, and Silva bought their plan and agreed to get them the supplies they needed to follow through.

Back with Jamie, the boys tried to get as much information out of her as possible. The only thing she could really remember was his eyes, and Jackson put it together that Hartley was suffering from the same thing all of the animals were. He had the defiant pupil. Shaffer proposed a way to help Jamie remember what she could about the scene, and they returned to the hotel room where he pulled some sort of hypnotic meditation technique to help her recover her memories.

As all that was happening, Hartley himself pulled up to an optometrist, held him against his will, and forced him to perform a procedure on his messed up eye. He wanted some of the nerve extracted, and the optometrist reluctantly agreed. After that, he fussed with the mother cell and created some sort of mixture that he wanted to have put right back into his eye.

Thanks to some sleuthing on Jamie’s part, they were able to track down Hartley. With Agent Shaffer following them, they came in on a terrifying scene. Hartley had injected something into his eye and reacted poorly to it. It was all Jackson could do to shake him and try to get answers about his father, to which Hartley replied, “Your father is the one who did this to me.” Shaffer told them to take the mother cell and run, he’d take care of the rest, so they did.

Thankfully it wasn’t too long before Abraham singled out one of Silva’s men and got him to lead him to Silva. Unfortunately, the man didn’t initially lead him to Silva and instead tried to lead him into a trap. While he struggled to get to his friends, Mitch complained and pointed out their inevitable death. However, in the midst of it, he realized something: instead of trying to lure the bats in, he could create something that would emit a super sonic sound that would chase them out.

Abraham, stuck in a tricky situation, used his brains and scared the bats in the warehouse to the point they did most of the attacking work for him. He disarmed all the men except the one he needed to have lead him to Silva. As he made his way to the rest of his team, the audience – through Chloe – got a chance to follow-up on the surprise reveal that Mitch had a daughter from last week. He was lamenting their situation and claimed that his machine wasn’t going to work and they were going to die. Chloe, sick of his constant pessimism and inability to see hope, finally called him out on his melancholy and revealed that she knew about his daughter.

They had a rather touching moment, that did a great deal to add depths to their characters. Thankfully, they didn’t have to rest in the aftermath of the emotional conversation for too long because they were told they could go. Abraham had finally gotten to Silva, and Silva had called his men off. The best part? As they left, the device Mitch had created actually worked. It chased the bats away.

It didn’t end as well for Jamie and Jackson. While Jackson sat downstairs in the hotel at the cafe trying to get a hold of Chloe, Shaffer showed up to check on Jamie. They shared a kiss, he weaseled his way into the room, and it quickly became clear that he had ill intentions. While Jamie dried her hair in the bathroom, he began frantically searching for the mother cell, and a news report came on that tipped Jackson off to Shaffer’s scheme.

Jackson tore off after trying to warn Jamie, which didn’t end well since she was a terrible liar. As Shaffer left the room with the mother cell, Jackson pursued him, and they had an all out brawl in a stairway. Just when things weren’t looking good for Jackson, Jamie appeared, grabbed the gun, and shot Shaffer. They left him for dead, got the mother cell, and got the heck out of there.

Back in France, the bear attack ended well for the woman who was finally rescued. The bear, however, had gone into hibernation in the middle of the summer which seemed to concern the wildlife experts who were present.

In the end, the team reunited in Washington DC. Mitch called his daughter and had an awkward but necessary conversation, and Jackson and Jamie shared what they had found. They were now tasked with explaining the mother cell, and figuring out what it all meant.
