It looks like MTV is taking on Game of Thrones with its own fantasy series adaptation, The Shannara Chronicles. This first-look premiered at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, and you have to admit it looks amazing. The scenery and spectacle of the show is absolutely stunning.
From the looks of things, MTV really has gone all out on this one.
Based primarily on the book The Elfstones of Shannara by Terry Brooks, the series is set in a post-apocalyptic version of our own world. Humanity has evolved into several subspecies which took their names from races featured in myth and pop culture. There are humans but also elves, dwarves, and more. The first-look posted above shows that while Shannara is a world of fantasy and wonder, it’s also our world and you’ll be able to see that in the subtle ruins dispersed throughout.
The series will focus on the efforts of Wil Ohmsford, Princess Amberle, and Eretria as they try to stave off a great darkness that is attempting to return to the world. The Shannara Chronicles promises both an epic adventure and the romance you’d expect in an MTV series with an equally stunning cast – many of whom are veterans of other genre shows.
Whether or not the series manages to draw in a respectable viewership remains to be said. Either way, all ten episodes of the first season have already been filmed and are ready to go. Terry Brooks was closely involved in much of the creative process and wholeheartedly supports the adaptation. And, honestly, that’s good enough for me.
I can’t wait to see the world of Shannara come to life!
