The Golden Globe nominations were announced this morning and it looks like Birdman is flying high. The absurd and hallucinatory Alejandro González Iñárritu film about the current state of cinema, comic books, and art garnered seven nominations. This includes Michael Keaton for Best Actor, Emma Stone for Best Supporting actress, and Edward Norton for Best Supporting Actor, all deservingly so. (Read our review here)
Other Best Actor nominees include fan-favorites Benedict Cumberbatch for The Imitation Game, Jake Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, and Eddie Redmayne for The Theory of Everything.
Felicity Jones also scored a Best Actress nomination for The Theory of Everything, alongside Jennifer Aniston for Cake. Forever recognized for her television work on Friends, Aniston has since remained mostly in the realm of comedy films. Her work in movies like The Good Girl (2002) and Friends with Money (2006), however, shows she can do so much more than generic comedies, and it’s encouraging to see she’s finally getting acknowledged.
On the television side of things, this looks to be a big year for freshmen series. Alongside perennial nominees like Louie, American Horror Story, Girls, and Downton Abbey, new shows like Silicon Valley, Transparent, Fargo, and Jane the Virgin (which is supposedly better than its title alludes) all scored nominations in some big categories.
Over in the Best Animated Film category, the favorites seem to be The Lego Movie, Big Hero 6, and How to Train Your Dragon 2. Though, you really can’t go wrong with any of the films in that category.
The Golden Globes will air live Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015 on NBC. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler will return as hosts for the third, and likely final, time.
