Rating: ★★★★☆
Last week, Esther kidnapped her own son, Elijah, who she is now subjecting to a series of hallucinations and life-like dreams. Through these dreams, we meet Tatia, played by guest star Nina Dobrev from The Vampire Diaries. Tatia was a doppelganger who stole both Elijah and Klaus’ hearts. While flirting with Klaus, Elijah is once more forced to watch and admire her from the shadows. Despite her feelings for Klaus, it is apparently Elijah whom she pines for even more. Even back then, it seems she toyed with the hearts of both brothers, fruitfully dancing back and forth between them. Well this sounds somewhat familiar. Tatia’s romantic whims are eerily similar to Elena’s.
Back in the present, Kaleb, Cami, Klaus and Davina are still gathered at the house in the Bayou where the events from the last episode transpired. Davina still lies unconscious. While they wait for her to wake, Klaus finally figures out Kaleb’s true identity and Klaus and Kol caustically reunite. While Klaus and Kol are catching up, Mikael awakens and kidnaps Cami for leverage from under Klaus’s nose.
Despite his misgivings, even Kol it seems is growing attacked to Davina. When called upon by Finn, Kol still hides Mikael’s identity from them, telling them lies instead of the truth. Sleeping beauty finally awakens, and Kol is there to fill Davina in on all she’s missed.
Out in the woods, Mikael is dragging Cami through the woods. The two discover a Halloween party of locals out in the bayou, where Mikael relishes an opportunity to feed. Klaus is hot on their tails though.
Back in the Quarter, Hayley visits Marcel and thanks him for his help in saving the werewolf children. She expresses her concern over not being able to locate Elijah or Oliver. The two head off to hunt them down. The two discover the bloodbath where Elijah was taken, and phone Klaus for help. Klaus though is too busy with his own life-threatening problems to help them, but fills them in on his situation.
Through more flashbacks of the past, we see Klaus slaughter six villagers and finally discover the true nature of his paternal parentage. Despite their different fathers, Elijah is still there to stand by his side as his brother. Tatia, having witnessed the slaughter, has other feelings though and refuses to accept their monstrous identities. Elijah was under the belief that he compelled Tatia to forget what she saw, but Esther claims that was simply a memory planted there by herself. She claimed Elijah actually turned in front of Tatia, and lost the fight against his innate predator, attacking Tatia for her blood.
Elijah then staggered back to his mother with Tatia’s dead body where Esther used Tatia’s blood for the spell to bind Klaus’ werewolf side. Elijah asserts that Esther really killed Tatia, but soon remembers the vivid truth. For so long, Elijah had created a place in his mind for his victims, a room behind a red door. As long as he was clean, immaculate, and respectable, everything would be okay. Elijah continued to fill the room behind the door with his unspeakable monstrous deeds and refused to acknowledge the truth. What would Hayley think of him now? Two broken desolate souls ripe for each other. Esther once more offers Elijah a new body, a new life, and an opportunity to give Hayley another child. At this point, Esther has a serious god complex where she is determined to desperately fix all of her children.
While attempting to assist Davina with the spell to break Klaus’ lineage, Kaleb’s true identity is revealed. Fueled with rage, the two briefly fight, but Kol, despite the fact that he is a Mikaelson, claims he has just as much reason to loathe his family as Davina and claims his mother has forced him to do her bidding by threatening Davina herself. The two form a rocky partnership and Kol agrees to teach Davina how to bleed power from a dark magic, in particular the white oak stake. Davina believes if she can’t stop Mikael, she thinks she can stop or temporarily inactivate the white oak stake instead.
Klaus finally finds Mikael and Cami, who is unconscious and wounded. The two face off once again. Nearby, Kaleb and Davina begin the draining spell while channeling each other’s power. Cami makes multiple futile attempts to save Klaus, but Mikael soon manages to stake Klaus with the white oak stake. However, the stake does not have the intended dire effect and only temporarily incapacitates Klaus, angering Mikael even more. Mikael tracks down Davina and Kaleb, attacking Davina and knocking Kaleb unconscious. During this time, Cami manages to remove the stake from Klaus’s chest but Mikael corners Cami. Before he can do any real damage, Marcel waltzes in out of nowhere and engages Mikael. It seems Hayley and Marcel have both arrived to offer Klaus some backup. Four against one. How hard could this be? Mikael, now outnumbered, flees with his tail between his legs.
Despite the temporary win, Marcel chastises Davina for her reckless actions. Davina, now in possession of the white oak stake and out to get even with Klaus, sides with Kol and the two make a quick getaway.
Back in his prison, Elijah continues to relive the murders from his past that Esther has somehow unlocked by opening the door in his mind. Before she can go any further, Hayley arrives rather conveniently, taking a nice bite out of Esther’s neck before rescuing Elijah. His face has never looked so happy and relieved to see her. When Hayley offers her blood to Elijah to feed, he refuses, believes his hunger will overwhelm him as it did long ago with Tatia. Despite this, the two share a kiss and he feeds on Hayley. The disappointing part? Well this whole rescue was but a figment of Elijah’s imagination, a dream spun to look like reality by Esther. Back in the real world, Elijah still hangs lifelessly from his shackles. The only way for him to find peace is by embracing Esther’s plan. Next week I really do hope Hayley arrives to save Elijah as she did so in his dream.
