Loot Crate vs. Nerd Block – July 2014
Loot Crate and Nerd Block are two very big subscription box companies. They both have a large fan base and they both consistently give out awesome product in their boxes. Loot Crate costs $13.37 a month plus shipping which comes out to be around $20 a month. Meanwhile, Nerd Block costs $20 a month but, since it ships from Canada, costs close to $30 after shipping. Regardless of which one you get, each box’s content always adds up to be more than what you initially paid for. Another perk is that you get to collect nerdy t-shirts. Loot Crate will have a few t-shirts throughout the year in their boxes, while Nerd Block has a shirt in every box (this could be the reason for the more expensive price).
Again, this month I got both of them to compare.
Loot Crate
Loot Crate’s theme this month is Villians. They even switched up the box shape, too. Instead of the rectangular cube, it’s more like a squashed cake pan…Maybe they’re reducing waste? Either way, it was a surprise. So for this month’s box they included some pretty awesome items. The t-shirt is a Joker/Loki shirt which is pure cool. Basically, it’s joker dressed up as Loki sitting on a throne with HA HA HA HA all over the background. I’ll definitely be wearing this one around. The other items in the box include two posters (Joker and Harley Quinn), Deadpool socks (SOCKS! Sweet looking socks), a Darth Vader vinyl head keychain, a documentary narrated by Christopher Lee on the history of DC comic villains, a Rocket Raccoon comic, a Bowser magnet, and of course the commemorative Loot Crate pin. All this packaged in a nice little box (by the way, on the inside it looks like our pesky villains got a hold of a magic marker and tagged it up.)

Nerd Block
This month’s Nerd Block had the usual t-shirt (Turtle Power!). The shirt has a sketch of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles van on it done in a very retro fashion. There was also a Star Wars Insider magazine, which is the official magazine for the Star Wars fan club (bathroom reader material? ;), a Star Wars X-Wing Fighter plushie (it even has tassels), a Nerf gun (zombie strike edition that shoots discs), and a documentary created by Morgan Spurluck that follows the lives of 5 San Diego Comic Con attendees and all the craziness that happens. The documentary also comes with two exclusive mini figurines (I got Stan Lee and Harry Knowles). I was super excited about the Nerf gun because I love all things Nerf. We used to do Zombie Nerf Wars at my college, it was awesome!

For this month, I’m going to have to go with Loot Crate. Their theme is just fantastic (because I love villains). The t-shirt, to the socks, to the keychain all just meshes together very well. The posters look amazing and will go good up on my wall. For Nerd Block I LOVE the Nerf gun but the other stuff I really don’t care for too much.
However, don’t just take my word for it.
Try both out, see which one you like. You won’t be disappointed either way.

This was my first month trying out “any” subscription service and it took me a while to decide on which one. I opted for Nerdblock I am off to a very disappointing start with nerdblock and may cancel and try out lootcrate. I realize with random box its hard to appeal to everyone but they posted a picture on the facebook site that depicted a box that had so much stuffed inside of it that it was unable to close so I was super excited and hoping they were doing something extra special this month. apparently that was just a marketing ploy. When my box showed up it looked normal and when I opened the box it wasn’t even full. It was missing the reference card that tells you what you are getting for the month. I wen’t online to watch some videos to see what everyone else got and I was missing the dvd/comicon figurines and dvd and instead there was a minecraft activity toy. I don’t care much for nerf so to me the only thing cool in the box was the tshirt.
My brother suggested I might like this website. He was entirely right.

My only issue with Nerd Block is that as much as I love the bundles they offer, unless you have deep pockets your forced to choose between things you like. I’m a gamer but also a comic/cartoon/ anime geek.
I just don’t have the funds to indulge in that many subscriptions. ;-(
