Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D: Yes Men (1×15)

Summary: When the Asgardian Lorelei (Elena Satine) escapes from her prison and to Earth, Lady Sif (Jaimie Alexander) joins the team to stop her from wrecking havoc. However, this is made much harder when Lorelei snares Agent Ward to do her bidding. Meanwhile, Coulson tries to find out more about GH-325.

Rating: ★★★★★

Oh man, I think this episode is easily the most fun episode Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has had so far, but I might be biased because I freaking love Asgardians.

By the way, if you haven’t seen Thor: The Dark World at this point, you might want to stop reading this recap because there will be hella spoilers.

As seen from the bumper in the previous episode, the Asgardian sorceress Lorelei has escaped from her prison as a result of the Dark Elves invading Asgard and wrecking up the place in Thor: The Dark World. She escapes to Midgard for the first time in 600 years using one of Loki’s secret pathways and ends up in the California desert. Sif comes after her, partially because of their shared history of Lorelei enchanting Sif’s lover and Sif taking her down the last time, but mostly because Sif has orders from Odin to bring her back.

If you just laughed and cried at that last sentence fragment, you remember exactly how Thor: The Dark World ended. If not, here’s your reminder: LOKI IS DISGUISING HIMSELF AS ODIN AND NO ONE ON ASGARD OR EARTH KNOWS THIS. So it’s not Odin ordering Lorelei back, it’s Loki. My question though is why? Does he not want her succeeding where he failed, or does he have something bigger planned for her? Sadly, because Tom Hiddleston is busy, we won’t know for now.

I do hope that there will be more Lorelei in the future of the MCU though. Elena Satine is delightfully bratty and seductive as Lorelei and the ability to make men fall to her will is a hell of a power to have in the currently male-heavy Earth-199999. Thankfully, Coulson’s team only has three guys including him, otherwise this episode would have been really boring really quick.

It was also a damn delight seeing Jaimie Alexander as Sif again. There was not nearly enough Lady Sif in Thor: The Dark World and it was just a whole lot of fun to see her interact with a new set of humans, kick some ass, call touch screen technology “antiquated,” and refer to Coulson as “Phillip, Son of Coul.” Not to mention the final line she delivers to Lorelei was such beautiful sarcasm that I wanted to cry.

Yeah, if you’ve been craving some Asgardian action, this episode is right up your alley because there is plenty to go around.

As for Ward, his plot line of being under Lorelei’s spell ends up being more about his relationship with May and how it’s all rooted in something bigger. When I heard that May broke it off in this episode before I watched it, I was ready for the “You cheated, we’re through” excuse, but it actually turns out because she was used to manipulate the situation that ended with Lorelei on the Bus. Ward lied to her about his true feelings before this moment too. Lorelei says so when she tells May that she wasn’t the one he desired before banging Lorelei in a suite at Caesar’s Palace. Is it fair to say that… Skyeward lives?

Either way, it became a problem and May stopped it like she promised.

(Also, is it just me or did anyone else want an Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D/Archer crossover Tumblr after watching Ward and Lorelei get it on? Because it should be way more exhausting to have sex with an Asgardian than they made it look and it just made me think of all of Sterling Archer’s quotes about losing blood flow due to sex.

Anyway, back to the review.)

Seriously Ward, you better call Kenny Loggins because you're in the danger zone. [abc.go.com]

Speaking of Skye, she’s doing a lot better in this episode than she was in the previous one thanks to the GH-325. Talking, hacking, and trying to walk, but Simmons making her get back into bed. However, Simmons is at a loss of trying to figure out what exactly the drug did to her and Coulson is still spooked by the big alien torso he found down in the Guest House. He refuses every request Simmons makes to upload Skye’s blood samples to HQ and is making very noisy requests to speak to Nick Fury. Not even Sitwell can help him there. May tries to get him to talk about what he saw, but he refuses.

When Sif makes mention of going to other worlds, Coulson asks her if any of the aliens she’s met were blue. Sif confirms them in a list, but assures Coulson that none of them have visited Earth recently. However, that scene is not important to me because of that. It’s important because she mentions one specific alien race: the Kree. It’s been uncertain for a while if Marvel Studios had rights to the Kree since Fox may want to use them for the Fantastic Four, but this confirms that they do. So Captain Marvel in the future maybe?

By the time the episode ends with Simmons arguing with him, both Ward and Fitz being under Lorelei’s spell, and getting no answers on this alien thing, Coulson is 616 percent done. Which, really, ends up being Clark Gregg’s best performance of the episode. I just love it when you can tell that characters are just completely done with the bullshit happening around them. May urges Coulson to talk it out. If not with her, then with Skye because they both have this miracle drug in their system. He goes to Skye and reveals to her about the alien, which completely doesn’t even phase her because 1.) she’s alive, and 2.) she’s a walking, talking 0-8-4 already. However, this is when Coulson makes the decision that they’re going to find out what Fury has been hiding once and for all outside of the team, starting with making Quinn and the Clairvoyant pay for what they did to her.

Of course, there’s a bigger secret going on on the Bus. It turns out that May was listening to the whole conversation and she calls in to an encrypted S.H.I.E.L.D. line to inform them of one thing: Coulson knows. Man, no wonder you were so goddamn intent to talk to him. How long have you been pulling this internal double cross, May?

This episode is definitely going towards the top of my favorite episodes list for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. It was a lot of fun and extremely universe building in many ways. It was definitely not a pain to rewatch this one for the sake of the review and I’m sure it won’t be the last time.
