Okay, so, they don’t attack just Popeye. The crazy aliens from Mars Attacks! go after a couple of IDW’s very different properties and Popeye just happens to be one of them. Zombies vs Robots, Kiss, The Real Ghostbusters, and The Transformers round out the rest and it’s a crazy little mix to be sure.
To be honest, I wasn’t the biggest fan of this little compilation. It was fun and amusing but while I liked the Mars Attacks movie as a kid I don’t think that I’m the target audience for the comic books. I was actually kind of surprised that it was an on-going comic and that it had so many comic series and issues in print. (I was also surprised that there was a KISS comic book at all.)
It certainly had it’s moments, though. It’s a fun little compilation and it reminds me a lot of the Marvel Zombies v. Army of Darkness or any of Marvel’s kookier mash ups. And seeing the Transformers take on the wiley martians from Mars Attacks was well worth it. So was seeing them drawn in the same classic, newspaper comic strip style as Popeye.
If you’re a fan of Mars Attacks or any of the other properties that the aliens are invading, definitely give it a read.
I will say, though, that I’m disappointed that one particular story got left out. This is a compilation of individual issues where Mars Attacks invades the various other IDW series. But where is the Mars Attacks Judge Dredd comic!?
