Childhood. It consisted of staying off the “lava rocks,” playing Batman and Robin or Power Rangers, neighborhood hide and seek and so much more awesome things. I mean kids would want to be pilots or astronauts when they grew up. There was always a sense of exploration, that curiosity that was never afraid to ask questions. Well, I recaputred my child like curiosity with a visit to the mall. Mind you, I’m 22 years old and when I walked into the R/C Toys store, I was a kid again. Remote control cars, helicoptes, airplanes, nitro cars…I mean you walk in and want to buy the whole store.
I saw this guy playing with a remote control helicopter and it looked really fun. I wanted one and they were having a 50% off sale. The guy was controlling a big helicopter but I figured I start off with a small one. The small one I saw was going for about $38.00 after the discount. I was really tempted to buy it then and there, but my poor college brain was like “you should check online.” I listned and controlled the urge and went home.
In less than 30 minutes I found the same helicopter and did some research, apparently there had been fakes being made, so I was a bit weary buying online. I read all the reviews and chose a store from Amazon that seemed legit. The helicopter was $20.00; I crossed my fingers and purchased it with my Amazon Prime account. By the way, if you’re a college student with a .edu address, you can get 6 months of free Amazon Prime. Do it, it’s worth it.
Anyway, two days later, I got my helicopter and was so excited.
I opened the box and took the helicopter out to examine it. I looked up online how to distinguish between fake and real.

So as you can see, the real ones have the Warning: small text on the blades, the fake just has Warning. The inside of the helicopter rotor is black and white, not pink and green (fake). And the circuit board of the real one is yellow or green, not red. The light that flashes is green for the real one and red for the fake one. I bought my helicopter from Battery Superstore for $20.44 for the Red color. I don’t know why red is the cheapest, but it is.
Now that I knew that this helicopter was the real deal, I had to charge it for 40 minutes. The only crappy thing is that I have to charge it through a USB (i.e. my computer). This isn’t too bad, because I can just surf the internet and charge my helicopter. The controller takes 6 AA batteries.
Finally! Everything is charged, turn on the controller (green light is a go) and turn on the helicopter (flashing red and blue lights, and flashing green on circuit board). The left joystick is to control height of the helicopter and speed of the blades, the right joystick is to control forward backward and left and right.
You have to push the left joystick all the way up to activate the blades. The great thing about this helicopter is that it’s pretty indestructible and it hovers at the height comparable to where the left joystick is positioned.
It took me about ten minutes to get the hang of the helicopter. The helicopter kept going too fast and hitting my ceiling then crashing to the floor, fluttering around then stopping. The blades bend so they won’t break and the metal construction of the helicopter makes it really durable. The helicopter will go for about 7 to 8 minutes before you have to recharge it for another 40 minutes.
It is really fun to play around with, especially if you want to procrastinate. My dog, Frankie hates this thing…he barks and backs way from it and is just terrified by it. I don’t know why, he’s not scared of vacuums.
Would I recommened buying this thing? Hell yeah. This toy is cheap $20 and you can play with it and act like a pilot…sort of. It’s just a really awesome toy that you can use inside, outside, sitting on the toilet…wherever. I’d start creating targets around the house and try to land on them. Once you get really good at it, it’s fun, make it into a drinking game. Drunk R/C helicopter flying. Yeah, it’s probably as fun as it sounds.
And what’s really funny, my dad came over and saw the helicopter and instantly wanted one. He even made me go on Amazon and purchase him on right then and there. So you see, even adults want it.

Great review! How is the performance outdoors? Do you think it could carry one of those 720p mini keychain cameras for aerial video?
It works pretty good outdoors, you have to be careful though because if you don’t control the height, it just keeps going up until out of range then it just drops. It can go up about 20 ft before it goes out of range.
As for holding a camera, I’m not sure if it can…I’m going to have to test out how much weight it can lift and I’ll let you know.
